We mentioned this in our last Slingshot newsletter, but I want to make extra sure everyone knows that Microsoft ends support for Windows 7 in less than 100 days.
After 10 years and many versions since, on January 14, 2020 Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or other support for computers running Windows 7, Server 2008 or 2008 R2.
What does this mean?
When someone finds a problem or way to hack or exploit Windows 7, Microsoft won’t concern themselves with fixing the problem. Microsoft will also stop giving any other technical help for computers running Windows 7.
How does this impact me?
Computers running Windows 7 will become a much greater security risk. Hackers will quickly target them, and may use them to compromise other computers that ARE current!
They will also violate electronic requirements like PCI, HIPAA, NIST, DFARS, and cyber liability insurance, which all require currently-supported operating systems. Continued Windows 7 use will be considered negligence and possibly cause fines or lost services for your organization. If so, it will also be against most IT providers’ insurance requirements to support those systems.
What do we need to do?
First, determine which computers to upgrade or just replace. >4 years should generally be replaced, but this should be decided case-by-case. If upgrading, update their software and hardware for compatibility before upgrading to Windows 10. Upgrades to Windows 10 Pro are typically around $190, and replacements usually $700-1200 in most cases. Analysis and other prep work are critical to a smooth transition.

What else might I need to know?
On January 14th, Microsoft is ALSO ending support for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and certain versions of Microsoft SQL server.
If your business is a Slingshot Pro-Managed client, we’ve either already done this, or are wrapping it up — just pass this along to anyone you think needs it.
Otherwise, January 14th is less than 100 days away: if your business still uses Windows 7, Slingshot is your best shot — call now to schedule your upgrades!
